The Row

Despite remaining one of the most treasured feats in Britain’s long maritime history, two men have never rowed a boat around mainland Britain. Nick and Hamish’s aim is to set the record books straight and become the first to do it, having registered their attempt with the Guinness Book of World Records.

Britain’s coastline is notoriously treacherous, with boats being entirely at the mercy of the rapidly changing weather systems. The 40,000 shipwrecks that adorn Britain’s coast remain testament to the dangers of sailing along the coastline. Accurate navigation together with detailed study of weather systems is therefore crucial to the success of this attempt.

Completing the row demands extreme discipline and determination. It is expected to take approximately 45 days and time spent rowing per day may be up to 20 hours. When rowing in inshore waters tide cycles will have to be respected and will govern sleep patterns, whilst open stretches of sea will demand constant rowing with rowers alternating every 2 hours.
